Andale, Hanover win state volleyball titles

Class 4A

The Andale volleyball team won the school’s first state championship, by defeating Ottawa (26-24, 23-25, 25-21) in the finals.

The Indians defeated Baldwin the semifinals before setting up yet another shot at a championship. In 2018, 2019 and 2020, Andale advanced to the second day of the tournament but came up empty.

“What I’m most proud of our girls is the determination they had to “Never Ring the Bell”,” Andale coach Kaylie Bergkamp said. “We had a Navy Seal theme this year that relates to never ringing the bell similar to that of seal training when all you have to do to quit is ring the bell. These girls never rang the bell because they played with the mentality of champions and truly trusting and believing in their training. It was a TEAM effort in our gym.”

Class 1A DII

Hanover won its first state championship since 1979, defeating Lebo (25-18, 25-19) in the finals.

The Wildcats closest match in the tournament was 25-21 victory over Hutchinson Central Christian in the semifinals. Central Christian took third.

“This year’s state tournament was completely different from last year’s,” Hanover coach Melissa Holle said. “This was the first time the girls had to go through pool play one day and then bracket play the next. I felt we were prepared going into this year to be the team to beat. The girls played hard both days and proved to be the team to beat. I am extremely proud of my team and the effort they put into this year. They should be proud of how they played at state and fully deserve all that they have accomplished.”

Other results:

-Cheney took third in 3A, while Smoky Valley took third and Beloit took fourth.

-Hillsboro finished second at 2A, while Garden Plain finished third.

-At Class 1A DI, Pretty Prairie finished second.
