Area schools rack up awards at state cross country

Class 4A

Hayley Trotter of Clearwater won her first state cross country championship, running over 30 second better than her competition.

Winfield took third as a team, while Kayli Meyers being the Vikings highest finisher in 15th place.

“Hayley ran a great race and executed her plan,” Clearwater coach Hayley Trotter said. “She wanted to start fast and put the race out of reach early. She has matured as a racer over the last year and seeing her dominate once again capped off a really special season for her. “

Also in 4A, Sawyer Schmidt from Augusta won his first state title, defeating Buhler’s Tanner Lindahl by 11 seconds.

Class 3A

Wichita Trinity won the boys title, with Clay Shively taking second individually. The Knights were 16 points lower than second place Southeast of Saline. The Trojans’ Dylan Sprecker won the individual race.

“The main thing I would say about this group is that they are truly a team,” Trinity coach Eric Carroll said. “They care deeply for one another and have truly had each others back through so much over this season, with Covid, surgery and injuries. We’ve had it all this season like I’m sure so many other teams have. The goal of winning state in 2021 was set by these guys the day after regionals last year.”

Jentrie Alderson of Southeast of Saline took home the girls individual title and led the Trojans to the team title.

“We were very excited that the girls were able to repeat as the girl’s team champions in Class 3A,” Southeast of Saline coach Wade Caselman said. “Our boys ran well but just came up short against a very good Wichita Trinity team. I am still very happy with everyone’s efforts this season.”
