Quarterfinal football scores, recaps (Nov. 12)

By Blake Chadwick

With the season dwindling down, the road to reaching history gets tighter and tighter.

And for Derby and Lawrence Free State, Friday’s game was tighter than ever as the Panthers edged Free State 27-21 to advance to the Class 6A semifinals for the seventh straight time.

The game was especially during the final minutes.

The Derby Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter thanks to two rushing touchdowns from the highly touted running back Dylan Edwards.

Panthers quarterback Mercer Thatcher scored on a one-yard run to put Derby up 21-0\.

Lawrence Free State bounce back and ended the shutout hopes for the Panthers after a touchdown run from Firebirds quarterback Jet Dineen.

But after Derby stopped Free State on four straight plays inside the 10, Edwards scored his third touchdown, going 95 yards for the 27-7 lead.

Edwards finished with 251 rushing yards on 25 carries.

But the Firebirds wouldn’t go away.

Senior wide receiver Jordan Brown became the catalyst in a very promising looking comeback.

Brown hauled in numerous big-time catches, including two touchdowns to get the Firebirds within six points with 3:19 to go.

The late-game heroics wouldn’t be enough as Derby earned a first down on a 10-yard carry by Edwards to run out the clock and keep their ring-chasing dreams alive.

The Panthers (10-0) play the Lawrence Lions (9-2) at home on Nov. 19.

In Class 5A, the battle of the City League was alive and well.

The Northwest Grizzlies and their quick-strike offense looked to outscore the power-running of the Kapaun Mount Carmel Crusaders.

But it was Kapaun that earned the 38-35 win to advance to the 5A semifinals.

The Grizzlies jumped out to a 21-10 halftime lead.

Northwest scored once more, putting the Crusaders in an 18-point hole.

The Grizzlies party ended there, though, as the Crusaders took control of the game and took a 38-35 lead with under two minutes to go.

Northwest had one more shot to win the game, but the hail mary throw from quarterback Geremiah Moore would be unsuccessful, and the Crusaders knocked the Grizzlies out of playoff contention.

Northwest had played in the previous three 5A title games.

While Kapaun has played in 13 title games, their last was in 1987.

Kapaun will play the Maize Eagles on Nov. 19 in the semifinals.

Maize High and Hays High, two teams with two outstanding recruits. There was Maize quarterback Avery Johnson and Hays running back Jaren Kanak, who has committed to play at Clemson.

They did not disappoint as Maize edged Hays 48-36.

The Eagles and Indians traded scores throughout the first half as the Eagles found themselves up 27-22.

Maize ballooned its lead to a 41-22 hole for Hays.

Kanak and Hays fought back to make the score 41-36, but thanks to a Tayveon Willaims run, the Indians’ playoff hopes were over.

Johnson led Maize, throwing for three touchdowns.

The Eagles will play the Kapaun Mount Carmel Crusaders on Nov. 19.

In Class 4A Andover Central took care of Wamego from start to finish. The Jaguars won 48-0 and held Wamego to 82 total yards of offense.

Quarterback Kai Kunz was a perfect 8-of-8 passing for 136 yards and one touchdown.

Running back Ashton Barkdull also couldn’t be contained as he rushed for 146 yards and four touchdowns.

On the other side of the western part of 4A, the Buhler Crusaders and the Mulvane Wildcats found themselves in a slugfest.

Buhler moved on after a 7-0 win over the Wildcats.

Buhler will play the Andover Central Jaguars on Nov. 19 in the semifinals.

In Class 3A, Andale took care of business like always after a 54-14 win over Concordia.

The Indians will play SE-Saline on Nov. 19 in the 3A semifinals.

The Cheney Cardinals’ unbeaten season ended with a tough matchup against SE-Saline.

SE-Saline scored on a 33-yard touchdown by Luke Gebhardt, propelling them to a 34-28 victory.

With some drama happening between Smith Center and Sedgwick, Sedgwick’s Lance Hoffsomer delivered with a touchdown pass with 21 seconds left to play to take a 49-48 lead.

Sedgwick advances to the semifinals for the first time and will play Inman.

Inman beat Conway Springs 26-13 to advance to the semifinals for the second straight time.

Inman scored the game’s first touchdown on Kyler Konrade’s one-yard run, but less than two minutes later, Conway Springs answered with an Izic Billups two-yard score for the 7-6 lead.

Inman responded with two third-quarter touchdowns, though, before Conway was able to score again on a two-yard touchdown by Brayden Kunz.

Kunz had 189 rushing yards on 31 carries, while Jace Doerksen led Inman with 131 passing yards.

Beloit beat Hillsboro 32-27 to advance to the 2A semifinals against Kingman.

Kingman beat Thomas More Prep 35-0 to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 1972.
