Saturday’s basketball scores, recaps (Dec. 4)

It’s the third and final day of the City League vs. AVCTL challenge at Koch Arena. I desperately hope this is not the last year, but it looks like it will be.

Here’s the results from Friday’s games.

And the results from Thursday’s games. 


Andover 57, Bishop Carroll 46 — This was a game rife with runs. Andover opened with a 6-0 lead, Carroll went on a 17-3 run for the 17-9 lead. Then Andover finished the second quarter with a 12-0 run for the 21-17 lead at the break.

Carroll went up 25-24 with an 8-3 run to open the second half, but Andover finished the third with an 18-5 run.

Andover was led by Eli Shetlar’s 19 points, including three threes; Chris Harris’ 17 points, with two threes; and Brady Strausz ‘s 10, hitting 8 of 10 free throws.

Carroll’s Walt Gray scored a team-high 15 points, hitting three three-pointers. Jack Hartman had 11 points.

Heights 58, Derby 38 — Heights raced to a 13-6 lead, sparked by Marcus Zeigler’s seven points midway through the first quarter. Derby was within 16-13 at the end of the first period thanks to shooting 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. Derby got within two points twice in teh second quarter and trailed 31-28 with 5:49 remaining in the third.

But Heights’ Chase Harris scored 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter as the Falcons went on a 23-4 run that spanned 10:20 of the third and fourth quarters.

Zeigler finished with a game-high 15 points, while TJ Williams had 11.

Derby was led by Deshawne Titus, who hit three three-pointers and had 10 points. Trente Parke finished with six rebounds and three steals.

West 59, Goddard 46 — West was led by Rob Basks Jr. and his 18 points, while Gavyn Phillips added 22. Healy led Goddard with 13.

Wichita South 49, Eisenhower 35 — Wichita South, which trailed by one at the half, outscored Eisenhower 29-14 in the second half.

South scored the first seven points of the third quarter and then went on a 12-2 run to take a 39-26 lead with 6:20 remaining.

Terrence Hutton led South with 13 and Asa Tarver had 11. Owen Rush and Caleb Conyers were Eisenhower’s top scorers at nine apiece.


Andover Central 59, Bishop Carroll 53 — Andover Central used a combination of a strong perimeter game and the ability to get to the rim and score as the Jaguars beat Bishop Carroll.

Ellie Stearns scored 11 points, hitting three three-pointers. Brittany Harshaw led all scorers with 23 points, and Maddie Amekporfor got her 11 points primarily in the paint.

Bishop Carroll’s Brynn Steven hit a three-pointer with 1:26 to go in the third to get within 37-34, but Andover Central responded by going on a 13-1 run for the 50-35 lead with 4:45 to go.

Carroll was led by Kendall Forbes, who had 20 points, hitting two fourth-quarter three-pointers to get within six points late.

Steven finished with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers.

Derby 53, Heights 40 — Heights raced out to a 10-2 lead, a run that was capped by Mya Mayberry’s three-pointer with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter. But Derby responded with a 14-0 run and the 16-10 lead with 5:05 to go in the second period. Addy Brown scored six of her team-high 19 points in the run.

The closest Heights got after that was 18-15 following five straight points by Kennadie Jackson, who finished with 10.

Derby’s Naomi White finished with 14 points, while  Maryn Archer scored 11, all at the free-throw line.

Heights was led by senior Zyanna Walker, who is headed to play at Louisville. She scored 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

Goddard 45, Wichita South 44 — Goddard trailed by 14 points midway through the second quarter before pulling out the win.

The Lions went on a 7-0 run in the third to get within four. And in the final period, they scored 10 straight for the 42-40 lead, their first of the game.

Maycee James led Goddard with 13 points, four steals and 11 rebounds. Reece Albin scored nine points, hitting three three-pointers. Wichita South was led by Serenity Jackson’s 16 points, six rebounds and six steals. Danaysia Smith had 10 points and seven rebounds, and teammates Zion Butler and Mahogany Butler had five and six rebounds apiece.

Northwest 45, Campus 43 — Nasent Robinson led Northwest with 13 points in the victory. A. Morales led Campus with 14 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. T. Tindall scored 12 points, seven in the second quarter. Smith had 10 with two three-pointers.
