Southeast’s Logan Lam pushes himself, sister on the golf course

Golf is a bit of a family affair for Southeast’s Logan Lam.

His sister, Alina, is also a top golfer, who finished in the top 10 in Class 6A in the fall.

“My sister and I are competitive with each other,” Logan Lam said. “We are always trying to compete to sharpen our skills out on the course. When me and my sister are out there … we mess around some of the time, like making noises on her backswings and cracking jokes.

But this is only to sharpen our mental game. If I can’t get to her, no one can.”

Lam’s strength is staying calm in tough situations.

“It’s easy to get frustrated with a bad shot or when you get unlucky out there,” he said. “So staying calm is very important.”

Lam got into golf when their dad took him to the driving range when he was 7 years old.

“I just sat back and watched him hit balls, and I was intrigued by the way such a small ball could travel so far,” he said.

“I wanted to try so he got me a set of junior clubs and I would hit on the range. After a while, he enrolled me in First Tee. This program has taught me many things that have shaped my game and myself as a person.”

Lam loves the game because it’s never boring.

“I love the constant improvement that is needed to keep up with other players,” he said. “No matter how hard you work, someone is working harder, and that drives me to want to work even harder.”

Lam focuses on honing skills through practice, which usually comes in rounds with Alina.

“I would say that every day that I am practicing, I am improving,” he said. “My game has progressed fast these four years. Everything is starting to come together, and I am excited to see what unfolds in the near future.”
