By Blake Chadwick

In a battle of the west side, Bishop Carroll traveled to Maize to take on junior quarterback Avery Johnson and the Eagles, who entered the game 7-2.

Johnson had four rushing touchdowns, leading Maize to the 28-21 victory in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

But it was Bishop Carroll that jumped out to a 14-0 lead, thanks to two Chase Smash passing touchdowns.

Maize bounced back behind Johnson, who had a 28-yard touchdown run.

Late in the third quarter, Johnson added another rushing score, knotting the score up at 14.

After an exchange of scores to tie it at 21-all in the final minute, Johnson led Maize down the field for a touchdown with 30 seconds remaining.
