Week 6 football scores, recaps (Oct. 8)

By Blake Chadwick

With rivalries the theme of this week’s big games, points were not hard to come by as the scoreboards across the area were lighting up.

In the battle between Maize and Maize South, the Mavericks came in undefeated at 5-0. Maize was just as good, but the Eagles found themselves sitting at 4-1.

The Eagles, debuting their black jerseys, got out to a hot start and knocked the wind out of the Mavericks early.

Thanks to the backfield play of running back Daeshaun Carter and quarterback Avery Johnson, both juniors, the Maize Eagles found themselves up 28-0 before the Mavericks were able to score before halftime.

After a 70-yard scamper from Johnson, the game was all but over. The Mavericks put up some points in the second half, but it was too late.

Maize’s 49-27 win puts the Eagles and Mavericks at 5-1. The Eagles, who travel to Derby next week, trail Derby in the AVCTL I standings.

The Holy War.

Bishop Carroll vs. Kapaun Mount Carmel.

It’s an annual hard-fought game, and this one was no different as Carroll beat Kapaun 27-21 at  Cessna Stadium.

The victory extends Carroll’s win streak over Kapaun to 25.

After a back-and-forth game all night between the Golden Eagles and Crusaders, the Eagles punched in a final touchdown from Jadonn Williams. But after a missed PAT, the door was left open for the undefeated Crusaders.

Senior Micheal Polley intercepted a pass in the end zone, slamming the door shut on the Crusaders.

Quarterback Chase Smarsh had three total touchdowns in the win.

Both teams are now 5-1.

Undefeated Derby host rival Campus and startedoff a little bit slower than they would have liked as Campus took the opening kickoff to the house.

But as Dylan Edwards and company got to work, Derby came away with an easy 70-21 victory.

Edwards had 177 rushing yards — including an 80-yard score — and three touchdowns. Quarterback Mercer Thatcher also added three total touchdowns, and Derek Hubbard scored on an 80-yard run.

The Panthers are now 5-0.

Buhler vs. McPherson is yet another big rivalry game.

The Buhler Crusaders found themselves down 17-7 after the first quarter, but then everything started to go the Crusaders way.

Senior running back Sam Elliott led the way with three touchdowns as the Crusaders won 42-30.

Both teams are now 5-1.

Andale beat Trinity Academy in dominating fashion, 96-6.

The Indians had 11 players with carries and nobody with more than 75 rushing yards. The wealth was also spread out as six players had rushing touchdowns, as well as two pick-sixes and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Andale is 6-0.

After the third shutout of the season for Andover, the Trojans are 5-1 after the 30-0 win over Valley Center.

Collegiate continues its undefeated streak with a 45-14 win over Clearwater.

Quarterback Wesley Fair had three touchdowns on the way to the Spartans being 6-0.

Cheney beat Holcomb to stay undefeated at 6-0. Quarterback Harrison Voth threw for two touchdowns in the 25-17 victory.

Salina Central was able to knock off previously unbeaten Andover Central 21-14.

The Mustangs are 4-2 and have won three straight.

Conway Springs moves to 5-1 after a 42-0 win over Sublette.

Conway Springs quarterback Izic Billups threw for two touchdowns and 163 yards while also rushing for two touchdowns. Brayden Kunz scored two rushing touchdowns, finishing with 100 yards on six carries.

Northwest continues to stay on track with a 67-6 win over Southeast.

The Grizzlies are now 4-2.

Augusta improved to 4-2 with a 35-20 win over Winfield.
