Week 7 scores, recaps (Oct. 15)

By Blake Chadwick

An Instant Classic.

The Derby Panthers edged Maize 42-41, getting an interception in the end zone on the Eagles’ two-point conversion attempt with 38 seconds remaining.

Derby, which lost the 2020 matchup at Maize, won its fifth AVCTL-I championship in seven years.

There was a lot of anticipation and expectations around the matchup, which pitted Maize (5-2) and Derby (6-0). The focus on the game was heightened due to the outstanding players, including Maize quarterback Avery Johnson and Derby running back Dylan Edwards.

Johnson and the Maize Eagles struck first after a long drive to get up 7-0. The defense quickly got a stop on Derby’s second possession, and Johnson led the Eagles to a 14-0 lead.

For the first time of the year the Panthers got punched in the mouth early.

Down 21-7, Derby added two touchdowns to go into the half tied at 21-all.

Mercer Thatcher scored twice and Edwards once as the Panthers had some momentum going into halftime.

Thatcher finished with 108 rushing yards, 89 passing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Edwards had 27 carries for 266 yards, scoring three times, including a 70-yard run.

Johnson threw for 288 yards.

Thanks to a hot start in the third by Derby, the Panthers scored 14 straight for a 35-21 lead.

It wasn’t enough.

With 1:33 remaining and Derby leading 42-35, Johnson led Maize down the field, throwing a 16-yard touchdown with 38 seconds to go.

But before the game-tying PAT, Maize called time. They came out of the timeout with Johnson in at quarterback.

His pass into the end zone on the two-point try was intercepted.
