Shrine Bowl Game to go on despite COVID-19 pandemic

The 47th Annual Shrine Bowl Game will take place Saturday evening at 7:00 at Hummer Park in Topeka, despite the state seeing a significant increase in coronavirus cases over the past few weeks.

This past Wednesday, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced that all schools will remain closed until after Labor Day, and all sports associated with those schools would be postponed because of the spike in cases. That decision will be put to a vote next week.

The leaders of the Shrine Bowl have made alterations to practices and team interactions in order to keep players, coaches and trainers safe during the pandemic.

The East roster has no players from Vype-area schools, but the West roster features 21 players from schools in Vype’s coverage area:

Scotti Easter, Andale; Kale Schroeder, Sedgwick; Carter Morrow and Kaeden Hoefer, Goddard; Jackson Kavanaugh, Salina Central; Joe Williams III, Wichita North; Ty Garrett, Salina South; Jeremiah Brown, Wichita West; Chance Omli, Eisenhower; Trevion Mitchell, Maize South; Riley Petz, Cheney; Phoenix Smith, Bishop Carroll; Keaton Robertson, Maize; Nolan Streit, Clearwater; Trey DeGarmo, Andover Central; Tyler Dorsey, Derby; Creighton Johnson, Beloit; Dawson Martin, Conway Springs; Jacob Fredrickson, Buhler; Eyann Zimmerman, Republic County; Tony Caldwell, Valley Center.

Steve Buhler from Washburn Rural will head coach the East squad, while Tommy Beason from Goddard will man the West.

All proceeds will go to the 22 networks of the Shriners Hospital for Children and their patients. Throughout its history, the Shrine Bowl has sent over $2 million dollars to the hospital.
