For the first time in school history, the Sedgwick baseball team took home a state championship. The Cardinals defeated Valley Falls 11-1 in the 2-1A title game at Great Bend.
Henry Burns went 4-for-5 in the game, including two RBIs and three runs scored. Sedgwick also had impressive offensive performances from Remington Nold, who had three hits and two runs, Lance Hoffsommer, who drove in three runs, and Nolan Crumrine, who drove in two more runs.
Hoffsommer was also the starting pitcher and he went five innings, while striking out six batters.
In their quarterfinal matchup, the Cardinals defeated Belle Plaine 3-2 and then they defeated Spearville 7-6 in the semifinals.
Sedgwick actually trailed Spearville 5-2 going into the bottom of the third inning before a run in the third, fourth and fifth, then plating the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Derby Panthers took third at the Class 6A Tournament in Fort Scott. The Panthers rallied from a 2-0 deficit against Blue Valley West to secure third place. They scored a run in the fourth, fifth and six innings to win.
Mercer Thatcher drove in the Panthers’ first run in the fourth, Luke Westerman’s bunt plated the next run and then Karson Klima’s RBI hit was the go-ahead run.
Derby’s starting pitcher was Saben Seager and he allowed two runs on four hits in a complete game.

Andover Central fell to Blue Valley Southwest 2-0 in the Class 5A Championship game at Wichita State.
The Jaguars were yet another victim to Blue Valley Southwest pitching, as the Timberwolves allowed one run for the entire tournament.
It appeared the Jaguars had a rally going to lead off the seventh inning as they had back-to-back singles by Jack Bell and Alex Ronk, but Blue Valley Southwest’s Ben Kurdna struck out the final two batters to strand the baserunners.
Central shutout St. James Academy 6-0 in the quarterfinals and defeated Hays 6-4 in the semifinals and finished the season 23-2.

Clay Center fell to Bishop Miege 8-0 in the championship game at the 4A Tournament in Salina.
The Wildcats defeated Topeka Hayden 2-1 in the quarterfinals and Clearwater 3-2 in the semifinals.
Clay Center’s final record of 21-4 was the best in school history.
