Moundridge’s Mackie Conkling – North Central Kansas Area Fan’s Choice Miss Basketball – Presented by Shelter Insurance

For Mackie Conkling, competition is about more than wins and losses, it’s about purpose.

The Moundridge High School sophomore balances a demanding three-sport schedule in basketball, volleyball, and track, but her approach remains steady no matter the season. Every practice, every game, and every race is rooted in something deeper than the scoreboard.

“Playing to the best of my ability so that God gets the glory.”

That mindset has helped shape Conkling into not only a versatile athlete but a grounded one. While many athletes chase stats or recognition, she focuses on effort, faith, and growth.

Her foundation starts at home, where she credits her biggest influence.

“My mom is probably my biggest role model in the way that she carries herself and puts others before herself.”

That example shows up in how Conkling competes, with intensity, but also with a team-first attitude that elevates those around her.

This past season provided moments that reflected both her competitive drive and her team’s chemistry. One of the most memorable came in a statement win on the road.

“Highlights of this past season would be beating Hesston on their home floor, and certain practices where we got after each other and really made each other better by being competitive.”

Those competitive practices, she says, were just as meaningful as the big wins, proof that growth often happens behind the scenes.

Representing Moundridge is something Conkling doesn’t take lightly. In a small, tight-knit community, every game feels personal.

“I think it’s an honor to represent our school when playing, and it’s so cool how much our community constantly shows up for us. We are such a fun town to represent.”

That support fuels her, especially in the toughest moments. When challenges arise, Conkling leans into her love for the game and the perspective that keeps her grounded.

“When things get tough, I just lean back on the fact that the love I have for this game isn’t based on my performances, but rather the joy of competing at a high level and giving God the glory. All I can do is give my all and let the work I’ve put in do the rest.”

As she continues her high school career, Conkling’s focus remains clear: compete with purpose, stay true to her values, and represent her school with pride, one game at a time.
