Consistency and confidence have become the foundation of success for Kobe Patterson of Chanute as he continues to make strides on the golf course.
After a solid 2024-25 season that included three top-10 finishes and a tie for 37th place at the Class 4A State Tournament, Patterson entered this season focused less on mechanics and more on mentality.
“My primary focus for this year was not letting the little mistakes on the course affect my whole round,” Patterson said. “Working on my mental game this year was a big focus, and I wanted to stay confident and composed throughout every tournament.”
That mindset has paid off. Patterson improved his season scoring average from 87.7 a year ago to 85.5 this season while also lowering his best round from an 81 to an 80. He added four top-10 finishes and six top-20 finishes this year as his consistency continued to improve.
Patterson said one of the biggest areas of growth in his game has been his ability to stay mentally steady during difficult stretches.
“I would consider my consistency and mental toughness to be some of my biggest strengths,” Patterson said. “Even after a bad hole, I try to stay positive and focused on the next shot instead of letting mistakes carry over.”
That approach has also helped his teammates during tournaments.
“I utilize this for my team by staying composed during tournaments and helping keep a positive mindset around my teammates as well,” he said.
While Patterson has seen improvement in his scores, he spent the offseason targeting several specific areas of his game. He focused heavily on becoming more consistent off the tee while sharpening his short game around the greens.
“During the offseason, I spent a lot of time practicing my chipping and putting and working on staying focused and confident throughout all 18 holes,” Patterson said.
His goals entering the season were clear: place at state and continue lowering his average scores. Patterson believes those goals remain within reach as he continues to build confidence with each tournament.
“A successful season for me this year would be placing at state and continuing to improve my scoring average,” Patterson said. “For our team, a successful season would be competing well at every tournament, improving throughout the year, and making a strong postseason run together.”
