As an upcoming senior at Topeka High School, varsity quarterback Asher Filbeck approaches athletics with the same focus and conviction that guide his life off the field. For Filbeck, faith anchors everything he does. He calls Jesus his greatest inspiration, describing Him as “the perfect example of what we should be like.”
Filbeck transferred to Topeka High before his sophomore year, a move he said was made easier by the welcome he received from teammate Harley Stamper. “He took me in on day one,” Filbeck said. “He’s made the biggest impression on me.” That early support helped shape Filbeck’s appreciation for the close relationships he has formed at Topeka High. He often points to the team’s unity as one of its defining strengths. “What I love most about my team is the brotherly love we have for one another,” he said. “We truly want the best for each other.”
On the field, Filbeck brings the physical and mental toughness he has developed through years of training. A multisport athlete, he also wrestles and runs track. He stays active year-round, whether lifting weights, wrestling, or throwing a football with teammates. His favorite class is weights, and he credits teacher Mr. Campbell for helping shape his athletic mindset.
As a quarterback, Filbeck said the mental side of the position is the toughest. He approaches each game with intention, grounding himself through prayer before stepping onto the field. “Before the game I always send up a prayer to God to help set my mind right,” he said.
One of Filbeck’s favorite memories came during a game last season, when he delivered a pancake block that opened a lane for his running back to score. Moments like that, he said, reflect the teamwork that makes football meaningful to him. “Athletics has taught me how to be tough and be a team player.”
Outside of sports, Filbeck is co-president of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
His favorite place in Topeka is Community Church, where he stays connected to his faith and community.
For Filbeck, athletics, faith, and friendship are inseparable. As he heads into his senior year, he hopes to continue building on each.
