Cair Paravel Latin School sophomore Matteo Gossard is already carving out a reputation as a leader on and off the field, driven by faith, family and a commitment to constant growth.
Gossard, a wide receiver and cornerback, credits his father as his biggest influence. “He always pushes me to be a better player, a better person and to put my faith into our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Gossard said.
Now in 10th grade, Gossard balances academics and athletics with intention. His favorite subject is rhetoric, and he still points to Mrs. Higgins, his fifth-grade teacher, as his favorite educator.
On the field, Gossard thrives on energy and connection. “I enjoy the energy our players and our coaches bring and the brotherhood,” he said. “I also like finding ways to lead on and off the field.”
One of his favorite memories came when a teammate made a one-handed catch, while his personal highlight was recording an interception in his first high school game.
Gossard embraces the challenges of playing cornerback, where he often matches up against the opponent’s fastest player. “There is so much technique needed to be in the right place without drawing a flag,” he said.
Through athletics, he has developed resilience and discipline. “Athletics are teaching me to be a good leader and to never give up,” Gossard said. “It has also taught me about work ethic.”
He also values the support system around him. “I love that my teammates always have my back and will always be there for me,” he said.
Before each game, Gossard follows a consistent routine. “I always pray to God that I will glorify Him. Then I make sure to stretch really good,” he said.
He credits teammate Lucas Marichal for helping him adjust during his freshman year. “He encouraged me when I messed up,” Gossard said.
Off the field, Gossard enjoys basketball, surfing at the lake and spending time with friends and family. He also gives back by helping with youth camps at his church and school.
“I remember being the younger kid and how important those older leaders can be,” he said.
