Day 2 Quarterfinal state basketball (March 10)

Day 2 of the state basketball tournaments!

There were plenty of upsets on Wednesday — what’s today got in store for us?

Class 6A boys

BV Northwest 58, SM Northwest 50 — SM Northwest took a 41-40 lead on Malik O’Atis’ three-pointer with 6:11 to go, but BV Northwest rattled off a 6-0 run, controlling the rest of the game. BV Northwest, which shot 22 of 53 from the field, was led by Grant Stubblefield’s 18 points and nine rebounds. Joseph Robinson had 14 points, seven rebounds and Avnoor Bhullar had 10 points, 10 rebounds. SM Northwest’s Malik O’Atis scored 14 points and Damare Smith 12. Michael Collins had six rebounds, Landon Wagler four assists.

Heights 61, Olathe North 30 — Heights cruised to its win over Olathe North, taking a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and keeping the Eagles from scoring until the 6:49 mark of the second period. Heights was led by Marcus Zeigler’s 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists, TJ Williams’ 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Dreylin Kemp added nine rebounds.

Lawrence Free State 50, Manhattan 28 — Free State allowed 11 first-half points as it dominated Manhattan in the victory. Jailen Thompson scored 16 points, hitting 6 of 8 shots, while Damani Cleveland made 5 of 7 for 12 points as Free State shot 19 of 45 from the field. Jet Dineen added eight rebounds and Cooper Jackson had four assists and three steals. Manhattan’s Keenan Schartz had six rebounds and Jack Wilson scored eight.

Olathe West 67, Dodge City 53 — Olathe West, which shot 58.5% from the field, was led by Harrison Kisling’s 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting and 4 of 8 from three. Jayson Luse scored 16 points and had nine rebounds. Dodge City’s Aidan Sowers had 15 points and Isaiah Taylor 11.

Class 5A girls

Andover Central 50, Bishop Carroll 34 — Andover Central’s Ellie Stearns hit 5 of 7 threes in the first half and hit 6 of 10 for the game. She finished with 20 points and Brittany Harshaw made 4 of 7 threes and had 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Stearns also had six steals, Maddie Amekporfor had five assists and Jaylee Jefferson four. Carroll’s Landon Forbes had a team-high 12 points and six assists, five steals. Kendall Forbes and Kiley Doonan each had seven rebounds, nine points.

Lansing 61, Emporia 43 — McKenzie Moburg had 18 points, Mackenzie Manthe 16 and Kamryn Farris 13 for Lansing. Emporia’s Addison Kimer scored 18, Gracie Gilpin 11 and Rebecca Snyder 10.

St. Thomas Aquinas 48, Spring Hill 27 — Beatrice Culliton scored 17 and had 11 rebounds, hitting 6 of 8 shots, while Catherine Goodwin had 11 points. Spring Hill’s Cate Milroy had seven points and four rebounds.

Salina Central 69, DeSoto 34 — Hampton Williams scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds in Salina Central’s win. Mykayla Cunningham scored 14 points and Aubrie Kiersct had 12. Landy Stewart added seven rebounds. DeSoto’s Mackenzie Farmer scored 12 points and Violet Conley had 14 rebounds.

Class 4A boys

Andale 62, Paola 52 — Zach Winter and Wyatt Spexarth each scored 14 points for Andale, and Jacksyn Potucek had 11. Paola’s Trey Moala hit 14 of 20 shots for 30 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, five steals. Caden Marcum added 12 points, six rebounds.

Bishop Miege 70, Abilene 40 — Aiden Wing scored 17 points, Daegan Jensen 13 and Christian Bowen 13, while Kellan Boylan had 12 points, 15 rebounds for Miege. Kaleb Becker scored 14 points for Abilene.

McPherson 60, Buhler 47 — McPherson, which lost to Buhler twice in the regular season, was led by Seth Madron’s 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists Cory Muehler (17 points) and Owen Pyle (12 points). Buhler’s Grant Ricker had 16 points.

Topeka Hayden 64, Eudora 53 — Joe Otting scored 23 points and had nine rebounds, Trent Duffey 16 points in Hayden’s win. Eudora’s Logan Sullivan scored 17 points, Jaden Hamm 12 and Kale Hammerschmidt 11.

Class 3A girls

Goodland 38, SE-Saline 37 — Goodland’s Jaxi Mitchek scored 10 points, while SE-Saline was led by Karsyn Schlesener’s 18 points.

Hugoton 52, Santa Fe Trail 40 — Gianna Vos scored 20 points to lead Hugoton, Breckyn Haar and Mikyn Hamlin each had 12, while Summya Adigun had 14 rebounds. Santa Fe Trail’s Braegan Buessing scored 13 and Whitney Herren had 10 rebounds.

Nickerson 47, Frontenac 40 — Ava Jones scored 14 points while battling foul trouble in Nickerson’s win, while Josie McLean scored 12 and Alexis Allen had 11. Frontenac’s Arnett scored 13 and Pyle had 12.

Silver Lake 63, Cherryvale 33 — Makenzie McDaniel scored 34 points, hitting 16 of 21 shots and finishing with 16 rebounds for Silver Lake. Taylor Ross had 10 points and six rebounds. Cherryvale’s Kelsi Lantz had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Class 2A boys

Hillsboro 73, Independent 46 — Matthew Potucek hit 7 of 9 shots to lead Hillsboro with 16, Brekyn Ratzlaff had 15, Grayson Ratzlaff 14 and Frank Wichert 13. Grayson Ratzlaff had nine rebounds and Potucek and Brekyn Ratzlaff each had six. Independent’s Christian Dean scored 13 and Joseph Phillips had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Lyndon 50, Sterling 38 — Lyndon’s Jackson Biggs had 17 points, seven rebounds and Toby Miller had 11 rebounds. Sterling’s Cody Oden had 22 points.

St. Marys 69, WaKeeney 43 — St. Marys had five in double figures — Fred Criqui 18, Luke Homan 11, Keller Hurla 13, Jaxon Hurla 11, Noah Jacobson 13. WaKeeney’s Charlie Russell had 24 points.

Valley Falls 64, Pittsburg Colgan 61 — Zac Evans hit 12 of 17 shots and finishing with 28 points in Valley Falls’ win.

Class 1A-I girls

Burlingame 45, Little River 39

Centralia 59, Spearville 42 — Centralia’s Oen Deters had 21 points, Avery Deters 13, Abbie Flentie 11, Lena Haverkamp 11. Avery Deters had nine rebounds, Oen Deters eight. Spearville’s Anna Stein had 16 points and five rebounds.

Hodgeman County 49, Clifton-Clyde 43 — Hodgeman County’s Malynn Beil scored 16 points and Morgan Ruff had 12 in the victory. Clifton-Clyde’s Shea Wurtz scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds, Emma Norbert had 12 points.

Pretty Prairie 52, Osborne 33 — Pretty Prairie’s Jorah Harbaugh had 15 points and teammates Bailey Young and McKenna Vogl each had 12. Vogl added seven rebounds and Aubery Young had five assists. Osborne’s Gracie Riner and Ava Stull each had 10 points.

Class 1A-II girls

Central Plains 58, Beloit St. John’s-Tipton 28 — Brynna Hammeke scored 18 points, hitting 7 of 11 shots, to lead Central plains. Madison McGuire added 16 points and Kassidy Nixon had nine points, nine rebounds and six assists, five steals. Beloit St. John’s-Tipton was led by Katie Brummer’s 12 points.

Golden Plains 49, Bucklin 28 — Golden Plains’ Rayna Taylor had 20 points, hitting five three-pointers. Kassie Miller added 13 points and Morgan Wark had nine rebounds. Bucklin was led by Sydnie Jones’ 11 points and Brooke Evans’ 10.

Hanover 54, Lebo 47 — Michelle Zarybnicky had 13 points, Ceegan Atkins 11 and Avery Behrends 10 for Hanover. Saige Hadley had 12 points for Lebo.

Hutchinson Central Christian 49, South Haven 40 — Hutchinson Central Christian opened the second half with a 16-0 run, and Kaylee Kauffman scored 26 points in the win. Samantha Ramsey added 14 points and 14 rebounds. South Haven’s Macey Pond scored 13 points and Aubrey Pond had 10.
