Campus’ William Groh – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

By Angela Brunk

Senior William Groh is making his final year at Campus High School one to remember, not just through his performance on the cross country course, but in the leadership he brings to the boys’ varsity team as captain. With goals of breaking 17 minutes in the 5K and qualifying for state, Groh has focused on being both a top competitor and a role model. “I’ve really tried to be the best example I can for the younger guys, like the upperclassmen were for me in my younger years,” he said.

To prepare for this season, Groh dedicated himself to a grueling offseason. He increased his weekly mileage significantly and incorporated double threshold workouts, training in both the morning and evening. He also dialed in his nutrition, making sure every aspect of his preparation aligned with his goals.

That work is paying off. Groh is looking forward to his regional meet, where he hopes to punch his ticket to the state championship. He’s also excited to compete at Nike Cross Regionals the week following State, where top runners from across the region will race for a chance to qualify for nationals.

Last season, Groh ran a personal best of 17:24 and earned second-team all-league honors. “It fueled the fire that’s been pushing me this season,” he shared.

Outside of cross country, Groh’s resume is just as impressive. He’s a state swimmer, drum major for the marching band, president of French Club, Vice President of NHS, secretary of the Environmental Club, and ranks in the top 5% of his class. He also works as a lifeguard.

After graduation, Groh plans to study Civil Environmental Engineering at either Georgia Tech or Kansas State University. William Groh exemplifies excellence in everything he does, whether in sports or in the classroom and beyond.
