Buhler senior Luke Kerns is entering his senior season with the Crusader wrestling program in the 165-pound weight class with one goal in mind: to win a state championship.
The senior is known for his hard work, determination, and relentless drive to win. Kerns has spent 12 years on the mat honing his skills.
“Every match and every practice is just preparation for regionals and state,” Kerns said. “So whatever I can do to get better until that point, I have to do it to be successful.”
Kerns’ personal goals this year are clear: win another regional championship and follow it with a state title. For the team, he wants to help the younger wrestlers develop and reach their full potential.
“We have a young crew, and I want to leave a mark on the guys so they can develop and be the best wrestlers they can be,” Kerns said. “I am not going to sugarcoat it. I’m going to preach hard work and push our guys to the limit. This is a hard sport, and practice should suck, but it will pay off if they buy in and trust the process.”
Last season, Kerns went 44-9, won regionals, placed fifth at state, and broke Buhler’s single-season win record.
“It feels good to get noticed, but none of it matters if I don’t reach my ultimate goal of a state championship,” Kerns said.
