When asked about why he initially joined Scholar’s Bowl, Grayson Sample, senior co-captain for Campus High’s Scholar’s Bowl team, has an interesting and humorous story to tell, “I was told in middle school that I’d find it interesting. I
probably would have joined sooner, in the seventh grade, but I thought Scholar’s Bowl had something to do with bowling!”
Grayson has come a long way from that laugh out loud moment. He was named the co-captain for this year’s team, and when asked about his biggest achievements, he included placing at a forensics meet two yrs ago and more recently placing third at the Nickerson Scholar’s Bowl meet. “I’m proud of those accomplishments because it shows that I’m an OK orator, and placing third at the Nickerson Scholar’s Bowl this year was the first time our team had placed that high.”
Sample really enjoys his team, and even more so his role as a leader, “My role is to stay positive. Even though we don’t always win rounds, I like to focus on the upside, which is hopefully that we did our best.”
Grayson says his biggest fear is “…buzzing in early and getting it wrong!” He also says that he mostly likes history questions, but in general, he likes Scholar’s Bowl because it is fun, “I look forward to improving my knowledge base. Scholar’s Bowl provides me with random information that I later like to pass along as fun facts.”
Grayson is also active in other aspects of the Campus school culture. He plays the violin and has participated in orchestra, where he was second chair. He assists in coaching debate and says, “I enjoy coaching debate. I don’t actually compete in it though, because it stresses me out.”
Grayson is solid in the classroom, too, where he carries a strong 3.76 GPA. Following graduation, Sample plans to go to college to study accounting and business management.
