Frontenac’s Brock Wiemers – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Bekah Harlan Shelter Insurance

By Ken Hansard

Brock Wiemers, junior shortstop for the Frontenac Raiders, comes by his love for sports naturally.  “I’ve been around competition my entire life. My dad coached college football at the D-1 level. My brother pitched at Pitt State. My aunt is a professional volleyball coach, and my uncle coached D-1 football. I have an uncle who was an Olympian. I was around competition constantly, and I learned so much from them, so I just fell in love with it right away.”

Now, Wiemers is forging his own path in sports, specifically on the diamond for the Raiders.  After batting .350 and putting up a .900 fielding percentage as a sophomore, Brock was awarded Unanimous First-Team All-League (CNC) as well as First-Team All-State by Sports in Kansas.

Wiemers and the Raiders finished last year 10-3 in the league, good enough to earn CNC Co-Champs. As a junior, Brock expects even more from himself and hopes to elevate his role on the team and help to boost the team’s overall performance, “We always want to win the league, win the regional, and obviously win that state championship.  We try to take our approach as one day at a time and focus on getting closer to that next goal each day.  As a junior who has been lucky enough to start the last two years, I know I have a leadership role to play this season, not only being vocal, but also leading by example.”

In an effort to establish that leadership role, Wiemers put in a lot of hard work in the off-season to improve himself, “I’ve really worked on getting faster and stronger because I feel that’s something you can never do enough of.  I’ve also worked hard on getting my swing locked in and comfortable. Right now, I’m just looking forward to getting back on the field with my teammates and winning games.”

Brock also stars in football for the Raiders, a sport in which he received SIK All State honors.  He was nominated First-Team All-CNC as both a receiver and as a defensive back.

Wiemers is also a standout in the classroom, where he earned a 3.95 GPA over his first two-and-a-half years.  He is a member of the prestigious National Honors Society. He would eventually like to continue his baseball and academic pursuits at the collegiate level.
