Maize baseball player Gavin Short said his offseason was the most productive one he has ever had, and for that reason alone, he’s ready for the season to begin.
“I’m excited to carry that momentum into the season and do my part to help the team,” Short said.
Calling it an offseason may actually be a stretch for Short.
“I stayed committed to my diet and gained 20 pounds while getting stronger and faster,” Short said. “I built a tough schedule each week loaded with hitting, running, lifting, and some throwing. I love the process and hitting is therapeutic to me.”
Short loves baseball, and it’s certainly a passion, but he knows his impact can extend far beyond the game.
“I am focused on improving the mental side of the game this season,” Short said. “I’ll do this by keeping Christ first in my life and consistently living through the Word. I want to be a multiplier in the dugout. Baseball is a blessing and a platform.”
As a first-team all-league outfielder and second-team all-league pitcher, Short has already accomplished a lot in his high school career. Now, he wants the Eagles to accomplish what they couldn’t last year.
“We want to win state,” Short said. “There are some really good 6A teams, but we have been to state the last two years as the younger team. This year we are ready for a long run.”
