There’s no doubt that Asa Briscoe’s size makes him stand out for South Gray. He’s 6-foot-3, 260 pounds – and he moves well.

“We are able to play him at any position, and he can excel,” South Gray coach Austin Jantz said. “So far this season, he has played every position on offense, including quarterback.

“He is a very physical kid that can change the course of the game at any level and deliver a spark to a team in many ways.”

Briscoe’s progression has included the usual growth in athletes, including becoming bigger, faster and stronger.

But the growth that has been most key is in leadership.

“He is a lead-by-example (guy) but also a vocal leader, as well,” Jantz said. “This has made others around him better, as well as helping develop the young kids that we have through his leadership, which makes him great for any program at any level.”

Briscoe noted that the leadership part is important to him.

“I try to help the team by being a supportive teammate and playing multiple positions a game,” he said. “We have had kind of a rough season, so I’m hoping to finish on a strong note and make playoffs and hopefully make a little run.”

He’s also straightforward about the season.

“I’ve been playing all right this season,” he said. “The team just had a really well-rounded game against Elkhart, and we are looking forward to next week against Kinsley.

“The team has gotten a lot better, especially over the last two games. We have started to figure some things out on the line and on defense.”

But Briscoe is more than his size, athleticism and leadership.

“Asa is a good kid,” Jantz said. “He is not only a good athlete, but also a great student with great character and integrity. He does what he is suppose to do. You never have to worry about outside issues – he just shows up and works hard.”
