Davontae Davis has steadily built himself into one of the premier sprinters in the Kansas, and his senior season is shaping up to be his most impressive yet. Competing in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and relays, Davis has already posted early-season personal records of 10.7, 22.1, and 51.4. All are marks that rank him among the top athletes in Kansas and signal a strong push toward the postseason.
A three-time Kaw Valley Conference champion in both the 100m and 200m, Davis also holds league records in the sprint events. His 2025 season included a state title in the 4×100 relay with a school-record time of 42.48, along with individual finishes of third in the 200m and fourth in the 100m. “Breaking 11 seconds in the 100 meant a lot to me because I didn’t start track until my sophomore year,” Davis said. “It made me feel like I was catching up.”
Now a team captain, Davis embraces leadership and accountability. “I see the underclassmen who are looking up to me and trying to follow in my footsteps, and it means a lot to me,” he said. That leadership will be key as his team builds on last year’s success, which included a strong showing at state and a near-miss for a regional title.
Davis has set ambitious goals for his final season, including breaking his school records of 10.55 in the 100m and 21.57 in the 200m, along with capturing an individual state championship. “I’m really focused on getting first place at state in one of my sprint events,” he said.
Despite challenges, such as limited training facilities and tough competition, Davis continues to refine his technique, and particularly his block starts, in an effort to gain that all-important edge. Davontae is a multisport athlete who also played football and basketball for the Cyclones. He earned 3A All-State Honorable Mention honors in football.
Following graduation, Davis intends to continue his academic and athletic career, with plans to play football and run track at Baker University.
