Ivanna Fierro, senior shooting guard / forward for the Bishop Ward Cyclones, talked a lot about “staying active” in her interview, which isn’t surprising, since the three-sport athlete seems to stay busy year around.
Fierro also plays forward and mid-fielder for the soccer team and first base for the softball team. Additionally, as a sophomore, she was a cross-country athlete. But this time of the year, it’s all about basketball. “I came to love the sport, and really, all sports, because I grew up watching my older brother play, and cheering him on gave me the desire to be active in sports, as well.”
Ivanna, who says it may be a bit of a challenge early on to learn new plays and develop chemistry and rhythm with her teammates, is proud of what the team accomplished as last season progressed and believes this team will also grow as the season unfolds, “I raised my assists last year and was able to get in the paint way more often. We improved our collaboration as a team, and we got used to each other’s movements and scoring rhythms.”
In the end, Fierro is keeping the things she would like to accomplish for her senior season of basketball fairly simple, “I’ve stayed active, which has helped me to fight a mindset of demotivation. I went to the gym a lot in my free time. I’m looking forward to having a good last year with my teammates, getting better each time out, and staying active.”
Following high school, Fierro, who sports a 3.5 G.P.A. in the classroom, would like to attend community college to study nursing, after which she plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree while studying nursing, pediatrics, and / or dental hygiene.
