Laynie Winfrey from Eureka was certainly busy this past summer in hopes that it would translate to even more success for her this winter.
Winfrey averaged 13 points, six rebounds and five assists last season en route to first team all-league selection.
“In the offseason I played on the Oklahoma Swarm out of Oklahoma City,” Winfrey said. “I had a great experience. My coaches and teammates were amazing and helped me to grow as a player and become a better person. We traveled to many big tournaments. We went to Houston, Dallas, Louisville, Tulsa, and Chicago. I was blessed enough to play in-front of some big time coaches.”
Eureka returns the majority of its team from last year, which has Winfrey excited.
“I’m excited to pick up where we left off last season,” Winfrey said. “We didn’t lose any players and we were lucky enough to gain some solid players. I’m also really excited to be part of such an amazing program and team that coach Hoyt and Ptacek have poured their heart and soul into.”
Becoming a quicker player was a focal point for Winfrey throughout the offseason and she hopes that translates to the regular season.
“During the offseason I worked countless hours on my foot speed,” Winfrey said. “Improving this skill will help me become quicker and more efficient on defense.
