Garden City’s Charly Vollersten – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

For Garden City sophomore Charly Vollersten, volleyball isn’t just about the wins — it’s about the culture being built around the program. “The accountability is top-notch! Our coaches set high standards on and off the court,” Vollersten said. “I love that the culture is changing for the Buffaloes, there has been an increase in community and student body support.”

Vollersten has been playing volleyball nearly her whole life. “My volleyball career started as a kindergartener playing REC volleyball,” she said. “In addition to REC volleyball I started playing club volleyball at the age of 8.” That early start has paid off, as she’s developed into one of Garden City’s young leaders and standout players.

One of the biggest areas of growth for Vollersten this season has been her mindset. “My mental game 100% is most improved,” she said. “I’ve really focused on positive self-talk and next ball mentality.” That focus has helped her maintain composure and confidence, even in pressure-packed moments.

Her serving game is another strength. “My preferred serve is a jump float,” Vollersten said. “I seem to have the most success with this technique allowing me to put the most pressure on the opposing team’s serve receiver.”

She’s also quick to give credit to her teammates. “The teammate that impresses me the most is by far freshman, Ellie Konrade,” she said. “She was put in a tough position and has stepped up in a big way for our team. Her ability to stay fearless on the court is impressive.” Vollersten also noted the chemistry she shares with her setter. “Our squad is led by sophomore, Josslynn George. We’ve played together for several years, and our connections continue to improve.”

When she’s not in the gym, Vollersten enjoys downtime with family and friends. “Most of my free time is spent with friends and family or getting extra sleep,” she said. “I enjoy car rides, listening to music, Target runs, and eating out.”

As for her future, Vollersten has big goals ahead. “I am interested in playing volleyball at the next level,” she said. “I hope to pursue a career in the medical field. My plans are to continue to research schools and programs and to find the best fit for both.”
