Last year Newton senior Avery Hinojos won the 5A state championship at 115 pounds, and this year she hopes to do the same thing.
“I am most excited to see how my season goes and to achieve all the goals I will accomplish through my high school wrestling career. I’m looking forward to bonding with my teammates and club teammates I will see at
tournaments throughout the year. Most importantly, I’m most thrilled to get my 2nd state title at 115lbs in February,” Hinojos said.
Hinojos spent a lot of her summer attending freestyle and folkstyle camps, tournaments, and practices, as well as some other cool opportunities.
“Over the summer, I had the opportunity to represent Team Kansas at the National Duals in Indiana in the 120 pound weight class,” Hinojos said.
Apart from attending different tournaments, Hinojos set her focus over the offseason on improving her mindset going into matches.
“Throughout the season, I want to stay focused and determined. During the offseason, I reminded myself not to overthink my progress and maintain a positive mindset,” Hinojos said.
Even though one of Hinojos’ main motivators is to defend her state title, she also is motivated to lead her team to another successful year.
“I’d like to place higher in the state tournament and continue to support each other. I am a leader on my team, and I have earned the role of team captain over the years. I set a good example through my work ethic and by helping out my teammates,” Hinojos said.
