By Joanna Chadwick

Kapaun Mount Carmel’s 26-game losing streak to crosstown rival Bishop Carroll is over.

It was a rare site at Wichita East today — the Aces hosted an afternoon football game, beating Emporia 76-0.

“It was nice to have a home game,” said East coach Ene Akpan, whose team always plays at another stadium because the Aces don’t have lights. “It shows us where we have came as a program the last few years as an inner city school.

“We wouldn’t have had a home game if we were the East of old, so that game was major for the senior class. That shows they changed the program and the outlook of East High for the state.”

East brought in bleachers and set them up all around the field — not a bad seat for anyone.

It’s not easy playing a game three hours earlier than normal, but Akpan and the Aces didn’t mind one bit. Even though it through Akpan’s usual plans off a bit.

“It was strange playing that early,” Akpan said. “Changed up my entire routine on normal game days, so the early game, I’m not a fan of it.”

Certainly understandable.

Since starting the season with a 1-point loss to Washburn Rural and a 43-29 loss to Kapaun, East has won four straight to improve to 4-2.
