Week 1 recap: Mill Valley ends Derby’s 26-game win streak

By Blake Chadwick

The 2020 football season is now underway.

Belle Plaine opened with a 49-0 win against Independent. But the game ended at halftime due to a plethora of Independent injuries.

After an early receiving touchdown by Tim Bible to start the game, the Dragons would just “keep rolling,” senior Eli Wiseman said.

Wiseman did it all in his senior campaign with a rushing touchdown, a punt return for a touchdown and a scoop and score as the Dragons went into cruise control.

Derby vs. Mill Valley was dubbed the game of the week if not game of the year by many because it pitted the two defending champs in their respective classes in the opening game of the 2020 season.

But after an incredibly fast start by Mill Valley quarterback Cooper Marsh and the rest of the Mill Valley Jaguars, the Panthers trailed 35-7 at halftime in one of the most lopsided Derby Panther performances.

Mill Valley won 45-14, snapping Derby’s 26-game winning streak that included the 2018 and 2019 Class 6A championships.

Josh Sanders, a senior transfer from Wichita Heights, made an impact right away as a Maize High Eagle — he scored on the opening kickoff. Then, in the midst of a defensive battle, Sanders busted the game wide open with two more touchdowns for the Eagles in the 20-6 win.

Goddard beat Buhler 35-20, with the spotlight directly on quarterback Kyler Semrad and receiver Jake Shope, who hooked up for over 300 yards and four touchdowns.

Maize South put up 602 yards of offense on its way to the win against Great Bend 56-0.

In the first game of the Weston Schartz-era at Kapaun, the Crusaders traveled to Dodge City and tok care of business with a 42-0 win. Kapaun’s defense held the Red Demons to under 100 yards, and the offense surpassed 400 yards.

Andale won 58-10 over Rose Hill.

Bishop Carroll won a close one 29-28 over Junction City.

Wichita Collegiate cruised to an easy victory over Mulvane 56-0, thanks to four touchdowns and a fumble recovery by sophomore Wesley Fair.

Clearwater beat Welington 36-29 in OT. Tanner Cash scored the game-winning touchdown.

Garden Plain beat Conway Springs 14-13. The Owls scored the game’s first two touchdowns, but Conway Springs got within one on a Cole Schulte 13-yard run. The two-point conversion failed.

Canton-Galva beat Goessel 54-0.

Andover Central edged Newton 41-34. Newton’s Peyton Maxwell had three touchdowns.

Arkansas City moves to 1-0 after a 33-0 win over Winfield.

Trinity Academy beat Chaparral 33-25, its first win since Week 8 of 2018.

Campus beat Salina Central 37-32.

Cheney beat Kingman 38-14.
