As his senior season approaches, Hesston’s Gavin Larson believes the work put in long before kickoff will determine how far the Swathers can go this fall.
Larson said he is eager to see the team’s offseason commitment translate into success on the field, especially with a senior class that has embraced the responsibility of leading by example.
“I’m really excited to play again with my teammates and see all of our hard work pay off,” Larson said. “Our senior class sets the example in the offseason with our commitment to making ourselves better for the team.”
Larson has spent the offseason preparing for an expanded role, dedicating himself to strength training while working with trainers to improve his athleticism. The preparation is aimed at allowing him to contribute on both sides of the ball during his final high school season.
“This offseason I have really hit the weight room and worked with trainers to prepare myself to play both sides of the game this year in order to show the best me going into my senior year,” he said.
Already one of the Central Kansas League’s top defensive backs, Larson is focused on becoming an even more complete player. After recording 49 tackles and four interceptions last season — including two returned for touchdowns — and earning first-team All-CKL honors, he wants to make an even bigger impact this fall.
“I hope to show my speed and being able to fly around in the secondary even faster,” Larson said. “I also want to be the vocal leader for the team. I watch a lot of film to prepare myself and my teammates against any opponent we face.”
Leadership has become just as important to Larson as production. He wants to set the tone through preparation, communication and consistency while helping the Swathers take the next step after several postseason disappointments.
His personal goals reflect his high expectations.
“My individual goals would be first-team all-state and to lead the league in interceptions and tackles in the defensive back position,” Larson said.
