After an offseason focused on improvement and preparation, Wichita Southeast quarterback Mack Obar believes the Golden Buffaloes have the pieces needed to take a step forward this season.
Obar said he is excited to see how much the team has grown since last year and believes the commitment from his teammates has created a strong foundation.
“I’m really excited to see how we improved from last year,” Obar said. “We have some good people this year and everybody wants to win. We have been working hard this offseason, and I think we are going to be pretty good.”
During the offseason, Obar has spent time improving his skills through throwing sessions, agility drills and footwork training. He also attended the Grind It football camp, which he said helped him continue developing as a quarterback.
“I have been doing throwing and agility drills a lot to get better footwork and working on my accuracy with the football,” Obar said. “I went to one camp called Grind It, and it helped me out a lot.”
Obar said improving his passing ability has been a major focus heading into the season. He has worked with teammates on running routes, timing and becoming more consistent with his mechanics.
“I want to improve my passing,” Obar said. “I have done a lot of practice throwing routes with teammates and working on my footwork.”
Last season, Obar contributed both through the air and on the ground. He finished with 600 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, 427 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
While individual improvement remains important, Obar said the team’s goals come first. One of the biggest areas he wants Southeast to improve is limiting turnovers, which he believes played a role in some losses last season.
“Some goals I want are to be better than last year as a whole team and I want to be better as a player,” Obar said. “Another goal is fewer turnovers because that cost us a game last year, and keeping our heads up after mistakes and not getting down on ourselves.”
Looking beyond high school, Obar hopes to continue his athletic career at the next level while pursuing a college education. He is open to playing either football or baseball and plans to study teaching or business.
“I just want to go to college and be able to play sports,” Obar said. “I’m open to any colleges.”
