For the Emporia High School boys soccer team, success this season will be about more than simply having talented players.
The Spartans are coming off a 10-6-1 season under coach Victor Ibarra and enter the new campaign focused on the details that can separate a good team from a championship contender.
Ibarra said the Spartans must be willing to outwork their opponents and maintain a high level of intensity throughout each match.
“Success, however, will not come from talent alone,” Ibarra said. “We must outwork every opponent we face and compete with maximum intensity for every second of every match.”
That approach starts with organization and execution, particularly on set pieces.
“We must be excellent in the details — especially our organization and execution on set pieces — because championships are often decided in those moments,” Ibarra said.
One of the players expected to help establish that identity is junior goalkeeper Braylin File, Ibarra’s nominee for team MVP.
File has earned the starting goalkeeper position through his consistency, maturity and commitment to improving his game. He also competes for TOCA FC, where he continues to face high-level competition.
Ibarra said File’s value extends beyond his play in goal.
“He communicates exceptionally well, organizes the back line with confidence, and leads by example every day in training and competition,” Ibarra said.
File’s work ethic has also stood out to the Emporia coaching staff. Ibarra said the junior consistently looks for ways to improve, embraces coaching and sets a standard for his teammates.
That leadership could prove especially important as the Spartans look to build on last season’s 10-win campaign.
Emporia also has an underclassman to watch in Roy Bernal. Ibarra said Bernal has the technical ability, athleticism and understanding of the game to contribute in whatever role the Spartans need.
“Roy possesses all the tools to become an elite player and has the ability to step into any role the Spartans need this season,” Ibarra said.
Bernal’s continued development will be a key part of his progression. Ibarra said the young player has room to mature both on and off the field, but believes Bernal has an extremely high ceiling if he continues to embrace that development.
“If he embraces that challenge this summer and continues developing with the same commitment he has shown, I believe he has the opportunity to become one of the top underclassmen in our program and make a significant impact for Emporia High School this season,” Ibarra said.
As the Spartans move forward, Ibarra said the goal is to remain committed to the identity the program has established.
“Above all, we must understand who we are as a program, remain true to our identity, and play with the passion, discipline, and unity that define our brand of futbol around the state,” Ibarra said.
