Russell’s Jake Mooney – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Shelter Insurance – Sarah Waechter

After not getting many looks at the varsity level last season, junior Jake Mooney is ready to make waves this year for the Broncos.

Mooney last year didn’t play a lot of varsity until six games into the season and ended up finishing the season as Russell’s leading scorer.

Head coach Brent Mooney attributes Jake Mooney’s success to his hard work and dedication on and off the court.

“He can score at all three levels and is a very good three point shooter. He will do all the dirty work,” Brent Mooney said. He is the first one in the gym and the last to leave.”

As a point guard Mooney’s goal for himself this year is to value the basketball more and make his teammates better.

“This year I’m looking to attack and create more,” Mooney said. “Some individual goals I have this season is to have less than 15 turnovers on the year.”

Mooney apart from wanting to lead his team as a strong point guard, he also wants to improve the culture at Russell.

“It has always been the same culture for years and I want to build a new program and culture for the upcoming,” Mooney said.

Mooney is also the type of player who makes everyone around him better by being a great person and even better basketball player.

“He is a very good teammate and doesn’t care about personal achievements, just the team achievements and the future of the team. Smart player on all aspects on the court, keeps a positive attitude all the time. Have had many officials say they really like Jake and like to officiate him,” Brent Mooney said.

Despite his talent as a basketball player Mooney’s main sport is golf and he hopes to make it to the collegiate level while also hoping to make it to chiropractic school in the future.
