Tanner Loughrie, a senior at Haven High School, is entering his final high school wrestling season. Competing in the 132-pound weight class, Loughrie is embracing both the challenges and opportunities that come with his team’s move up to 4A competition this year.
As a senior, spending one last season alongside his teammates means a great deal to him. With several new wrestlers joining the program and returning athletes putting in significant time on the mat and in the gym over the summer, he believes the team is heading in the right direction. Individually, he is especially looking forward to tournaments, including regionals and state, where the new classification will provide a fresh and competitive environment.
Preparation has been a major focus during the offseason. Loughrie attended camps and extra practices while also dedicating many hours in the gym to building strength and endurance. This year, one area he is determined to improve is his patience on the mat and his ability to maintain constant pressure against opponents.
Individually, Loughrie aims to stand at the top of the podium at the state tournament. As a team, he hopes to see more Haven wrestlers advance to state and experience success together. Last season, he posted a 33–11 record, placed sixth at the 3-2-1A state tournament, and reached the milestone of his 100th career win in December.
Beyond wrestling, Loughrie is a multi-sport athlete, playing football and serving as the catcher for the baseball team. After high school, he plans to attend Pratt Community College, where he will wrestle and pursue welding. He also credits much of his success to his father, who has coached and supported him since the beginning. “He has coached me since I started, and I’m glad he’s still coaching in my corner in high school,” Loughrie shared.
