Russell’s Girls Track – Team Spotlight – Presented by Hutchinson Community College

A program once fighting just to qualify athletes for state has become a contender. The Russell High School girls track team turned heads last season by finishing 15th at the state meet, racking up 17 points and sending multiple competitors to Wichita. Now, they’re aiming even higher.

“We didn’t qualify anyone two years ago, and only one athlete the year after that,” said head coach Taylor Betts. “So, to see our girls score 17 points and place 15th last year was a huge improvement. This group is hungry to take the next step.”

With only one senior lost from last year’s state team, coach Betts is counting on returners to keep the momentum going. “We’ve got strong senior leadership, and younger athletes who are gaining confidence,” he said. “We’re hoping to qualify more athletes and score more points this year.”

Junior Macy Patterson is one of the key athletes to watch. A talented thrower, Patterson has made impressive strides each season. “She has improved her discus throw at least 18 feet every year since 8th grade,” said Betts. “She placed 7th at state last year and is very interested in pursuing track at the collegiate level. She’s definitely under-recruited.”

The team’s versatility is a major strength, with athletes scoring in sprints, hurdles, distance, jumps, and throws. Sophomore Kinsey Zorn, who qualified in four events as a freshman and anchored the record-breaking 4×800 relay, returns as one of the team’s most dynamic athletes. “We’re excited about what Kinsey can do this year,” said Betts.

Senior Jaden Ney embodies the team-first mentality that has propelled Russell’s rise. “Jaden has tried ten different events during her high school career,” Betts said. “She’s willing to try anything to help the team and has been an incredible example of leadership and selflessness.”

With a growing culture of commitment, young talent, and proven performers, the Russell girls track team isn’t just aiming to return to state—they’re aiming to make an even bigger impact when they get there.
