Ellsworth’s Kinly Place – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Place Insurance

Ellsworth High School junior Kinly Place brings more than volleyball ability to the court. As the team’s lone setter in a 5-1 offense, Place takes on a central role while valuing the relationships, resilience and leadership that surround the program.

“I don’t think this question applies to me as I am the only setter and we are running a 5-1,” Place said of sharing responsibilities at her position.

Place said the team’s connection is one of the defining parts of her athletic experience. Whether the Bearcats are competing in a close match or simply practicing together, she appreciates the group’s ability to enjoy each other’s company.

“The thing I enjoy the most about my team is our team chemistry and how well we get along. No matter the circumstance we always know how to have fun and laugh. Not all teams get that experience so I feel lucky to have such great girls to play with and be around,” Place said.

That chemistry includes teammates who bring energy and encouragement. Place pointed to Leah Warta as a vocal presence and Mallory Peschka, her cousin, as someone who keeps the team smiling.

“I would say our most vocal teammate is Leah Warta. She has really stepped up into a big role this season and she’s a great teammate and leader. The teammate that keeps everyone laughing, especially me, is my cousin Mallory Peschka,” Place said.

She also praised Warta’s defensive effort.

“I think Leah Warta is also always going on the floor for a dig because she hustles for every ball no matter what,” Place said.

For Place, athletics have provided lessons that reach beyond the court.

“Athletics has taught me how to do hard things and persevere even if I don’t want to,” she said.

She credits former teammate Josie Kueser, a 2025 graduate, with leaving a lasting impact through her work ethic and support for others.

“Josie Kueser, a senior last year, left the biggest impression on me because of her work ethic and ‘team first’ mentality. She was always the person I went to when I needed a pick me up or I had to get something off my chest during the game. I now try to be the same person to my teammates like she was to me,” Place said.

Away from volleyball, Place enjoys reading, baking and spending time with friends and family. Baking is also her favorite school subject, and she is active in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America as the chapter president.
