Class 5A
“Jobs not finished” was the motto for the Maize South Mavericks during their Class 5A state championship run.
Maize South was finally able to get over the hump, which was Blue Valley Southwest, who the Mavericks faced in the state championship for the fourth time in the last five years.
Along the way the Mavericks won and won and won – their regular season tournament, the AVCTL I title, regional title.
The group also completed the undefeated, 21-0 season, setting a school record for wins and earning Maize South’s first state championship in school history.
“It was an unexplainable feeling,” junior Vitor Geromel said. “All the work we put in paid off in the end.”
Germomel, who just recently committed to Clemson, led the Mavericks with 42 goals and 18 assists. His 42 goals was the single-season scoring record for Maize South.
“It was a great season and a great outcome. There’s always a part of my game I would like to improve to take another step,” Geromel said.
Maize South became the first Wichita-area team to win a Class 5A state championship in the last 20 years.
The Mavericks outscored their opponents 107-13, which proved just how dominant this team was.
“I feel like everyone had a huge impact this season,” Geromel said. “All our coaches and players put in the work and deserved the final result.”
This isn’t unfinished business for the Mavericks, though.
“The plans for next year are the same. Carry this momentum and experience with us, now we know what it takes to win and we are going to try and repeat next year,” Geromel said.
Newton finished fourth after losing to Blue Valley Southwest in the semifinals round and St. Thomas Aquinas in the third-place game.
The Railers finished with a 17-3 record.
Class 4-1A
McPherson finished third.
The Bullpups lost to Baldwin in the semifinals and beat Trinity Academy 3-2 in overtime in the third-place game.
Trinity Academy lost to both McPherson and Bishop Miege on its way to fourth place.
