Independence’s Javen Colbert – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Advanced Physical Therapy

By Ken Hansard

Independence High School junior point guard and student-athlete Javen Colbert spoke to VYPE SPORTS in a recent interview.

VYPE SPORTS: What are your personal goals for the year?

Colbert: My personal goals for next year are to have A’s and B’s in the classroom and to improve in the sports I play.

VYPE SPORTS: What is your favorite memory about your association with this team?

Colbert: My favorite memory was beating Labette at home. It’s kind of a rivalry game, so it’s always nice to beat them.

VYPE SPORTS: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Colbert: All my teammates have left a good impression.  However, Kellen Lanning and Heston Smith have been particularly influential, because we push each other, and all our skills have improved since last year.

VYPE SPORTS: What is your favorite part of being a part of this team?

Colbert: My favorite thing about being a Bulldog is the hard work we all have put in as a team and the friendship we all have with each other.

VYPE SPORTS: What clubs, community groups, or campus groups are you involved with and why?

Colbert: I am currently not in any clubs, but I also participate in football as a quarterback and safety.

VYPE SPORTS: What accolades (in any sport or non-athletic activity) are you most proud of?

Colbert: I was named to the All-Tournament team in our first basketball tournament this year.

VYPE SPORTS: What has this sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

Colbert: This sport has taught me that if I am patient, good things will come.

VYPE SPORTS: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

Colbert: My dad tells me all the time that I need to give everything I have in anything I do, because at any given time, anybody could be watching.

VYPE SPORTS: Who inspires you and why?

Colbert: My uncle, Tate Turner, inspires me because he was really good at basketball, and he set a good example of how an athlete should train and carry himself.

VYPE SPORTS: Here is your chance to give a shout out or say thank you to anyone you wish.

Colbert: I would like to thank all my family members because their support allows me to do all the things I get to do. Thank you!
