Q&A with Campus’ Justin Kyle – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Visit Wichita

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My goals for this year would have to be to get down to 240 lbs, throw 45ft in shot put, throw 120ft in discus, get stronger, finish with all A’s, and get a good-paying job.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The most fun I had last year is driving down to Florida with my family, going to South Dakota, going on spontaneous road trips, taking college algebra and trigonometry, being in choir concerts, playing football, getting back into culinary, going to culinary competitions, staying out with my sister and her friends for her birthday, driving 2 and a half hours to my grandparents with my sister and one of her friends, going hunting and getting another buck, and working on my grandparents’ ranch.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

Mrs. Fussell, I had her for 4th and 5th grade, but when I was younger I would always see her, and I wanted her as a teacher and I would always be happy to see her. I would give her a hug whenever I saw her. She was my favorite because I had fun being in her class, she talked a lot so we didn’t have that much homework, and she treated us like we were her colleagues instead of students.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory would be when I was playing baseball and I was up to bat, I hit the ball and the ball went back behind and hit somebody’s car windshield, another memory could be when I was younger and I was playing baseball, the field we practiced on was locked so we all had to jump the fence to get onto the field to practice. Sophomore year when I went to pre-state at WSU, it was fun but it was raining, windy, and just absolutely cold, it was still a fun experience though.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

I don’t know, I’ve had so many teammates it’s hard to choose from someone.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part about the team is that with all of the throwers, we get along amazingly and we are able to joke around all the time and still do our work. We are all competitive and supportive so we all can reach our goals.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

I don’t really know where I would go for vacation, I want to go to every state and I like driving because I like to do things on the way to the destination, but I do know who I would bring with me and that would be my Mom.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

I would probably end up putting it in savings or investing it.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

In the last 4 years, I have completed over 130 service hours. I’ve worked concession stands, set up fireworks stands, picked up trash, ushered concerts, and escorted youth at the art fair.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

The clubs I am involved with are Colts for Christ: I’m in it because I believe in Jesus and God, NHS: I joined because I thought it would help motivate me to keep my grades up and support me with my educational goals and those things would help me later on in life, Tri-M: it’s basically the same thing as NHS but you have to be in a music class in order to join it, Student 2 Student: we help foreign exchange students and transfer students and I joined it because I wanted to help new students.

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

I’m involved with NHS, Tri-M, and the top 10% of my class, and I should be a Kansas Honor Scholar after I finish the year.
