State Tennis Recap

Class 5A

Doubles

Andover’s Brooke Walker and Anna Jittawait won the class 5A state and completed the perfect 30-0 season as doubles partners.

“Brooke and Anna have worked so hard for four years and deserved this,” head coach Stephen Alexander said. “Those two have worked so well together and support each other through good and bad. If I wanted to show young players what it means to be teammates, those two would be my example every time.”

Maize South’s Madelyn Fellows-Sydney Schumaker finished second.

Andover’s Emma Jittawait-Elizabeth Gaddis finished third place, defeating Holli Kalny-Caroline Kmetz from St. James Academy.

Salina Central’s Mallory Renfro-Addison Renfro defeated Bonner Spring’s Autumn Ashford-Penelope Kline 8-1.

Brooke Steven-Liza Dugan from Bishop Carroll finished eighth place.

“The doubles team of Brooke Steven and Liza Dugan was a very pleasant surprise,” Bishop Carroll head coach Darren Huslig said. “They finished eighth at the state and helped us take third as a team. Looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish in these next couple of years.”

Bishop Carroll’s Brynn Steven defended her state championship and completed her perfect season after a 6-0,6-4 win over Shawnee Heights’ Jette Glasenapp.

“It was very impressive to watch Brynn complete her undefeated season,” Huslig said. “[Brynn] had wins over the 6A champ and the 3-1A champ during the season. I’m very proud to have had her on our team for the past four years and watch her tennis level increase every season.”

Andover’s Molly Gaddis finished third after a 6-1,6-3 win.

“After a standout freshman campaign last year was tough on her with increased expectations,” Alexander said. “This year, she came back with an increased mental toughness, and it showed in her game.”

Andover’s Mia Jaramillo finished sixth place.

Salina Central’s Janae Monotya finished seventh, defeating Maize South’s Maggie Harrison 8-3.

Maize’s Rylee Frye finished ninth, defeating Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s Julia Judkins 8-2.

Team Standings

Andover ran away with the title, completing their three-peat and scoring 49 points.

“It always feels good to win another team title,” Alexander said. “This one was special because I think everyone just expected us to win it this year and that puts a lot of pressure on the girls. I couldn’t be more proud of how they handled that and just took one match at a time, working towards a common goal.”

Salina Central won the tiebreaker and finished second place with 23 points.

Bishop Carroll finished third place with 23 points.

Maize South finished fourth place with 21 points.
