VYPE recently spoke to Joe Auer Coach of the Wichita Heights Boys’ Basketball team about why he believes this season’s team has been great role models for the Wichita community.
To recap the season this team won 22 games including their mid-season tournament and a second-place victory in the state championships.
However, it is what happens behind the scenes that has made this team exceptional.
Coach Auer shared with us that for the past ten years, this team has had the highest GPA in the Wichita City League.
Not only are these players above average academically, but also in their kindness. With no community service requirement to their schools’ curriculum, the team promotes anonymous acts of service for its players. Even when it’s just sharing their joy to compete with each other.
According to Coach Auer, that’s what separates them from other teams. The friendship they have makes them want to work hard for each other. In fact, some of Auer’s favorite memories of the team include when they first begin arriving to practice. He enjoys seeing them interact and getting to observe their chemistry.
