Bre Williams misses chance for breakout season

If you have a spring sports student-athlete who would be a good person to feature? Email me at [email protected].

By Joanna Chadwick

Heights senior sprinter Bre Williams struggled during her junior track season with shin splints.

“It was horrible,” said Williams, who will walk on at Wichita State. “It stopped me a lot from being able to progress on where I needed to be. I had to make a lot of adjustments… I was off by one place in each event from advancing to state in individual events. I knew my shin splints were a big factor.”

She was amped for her senior track season, ready to show what she could do on the track. Coach Jivi Foster figured this would be her breakout season.

And then the spring sports seasons were canceled due to COVID-19.

“I think I cried, but I think I was prepped for it,” said Williams, who also played basketball. “… I had kind of prepped myself for it — if you expect the worst, then you won’t be disappointed. When everything else was getting canceled, I figured track would be, too.”

Williams, who plans to study sports psychology, continues her workouts in preparation for college.

“I’m in a really developmental period, so I’ve been working on developing, which I didn’t get to do my last season,” she said.
