League 42 fundraiser to honor Wichita’s best high school athletes

Bob Lutz, a former sports columnist at the Wichita Eagle, has been a longtime supporter of high school sports.

In August, Lutz will bring some of the best high school athletes in Wichita history together as a fundraiser for League 42, which he founded.

League 42, along with Visit Wichita, Wichita State Athletics, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and It Takes a Village, Inc., will host 150 for 150: A Celebration of Wichita’s Best High School Athletes at Koch Arena on Aug. 15.

Mike Pelfrey, Mike Bell, Caroline Bruce McAndrew and Kareema Williams were in attendance at a press conference Monday. They are just four of the athletes who have confirmed their attendance at the event, which is a major fundraiser for League 42, as well as the Sports Hall of Fame and It Takes a Village.

Pelfrey played Major League Baseball, Bruce McAndrew is an Olympic swimmer, Bell played in the NFL and Williams played basketball at Wichita State.

“I’ve followed high school sports for my entire life,” Lutz said. “This is a dream come true to not only work on this project with others, but to know that when it comes to fruition, we’ll have an arena full of legendary athletes at one place at one time.

“We’re still working on contact information. We have close to 90 confirmations from some big names, starting with the four we highlighted today.”

Three of the other Wichita greats that will be honored are Lynette Woodard, Jim Ryun and Barry Sanders.
